Modified Landy
Overview
In Modified Landy:
- 2♣ shows both majors
- 2♦ shows a 4-card major
plus a longer minor
- 2♥/♠
promises a minimum of five cards in the bid suit
- 2NT shows both minors
- 3♣/♦ promise a minimum
of six cards in the bid suit.
This differs from Multi-Landy [and its close relative
Cappelletti] in that there is no artificial bid to show a single-suited [min 6]
hand. However, it has the advantage that the 2♦ bid
can be used where competing pairs might be using Aspro/Astro etc, whereas the
Multi-Landy/Cappelletti players will frequently find they have no [legitimate]
bid to make holding a 2-suited hand with only four cards in the major suit.
Single-suited hands are handled by bidding the suit in question.
Responsive Bids
Advancer bids 2♣
[no
interference]:
This is no different from any other form of Landy, it's
just that we normally play the responses by ear rather than having them properly
specified.
- Pass is to play, showing a weak hand with long clubs
- 2♦ is a relay, asking
advancer to bid his longer major [a rebid of 3♦ by responder is weak with long
diamonds]
- 2♥/♠
shows 3+ cards in the bid suit [0-9]
- 2NT is forcing, showing 13+ points with no 4-card major
- 3♣/♦
are forcing bids with length in the bid suit
- 3♥/♠
show 4+ cards in the bid suit [8 losers]. Advancer raises to game with a 6-loser
hand.
- 3NT/4♥/4♠
are all to play.
Rebids by Advancer after 2NT from Responder:
- 3♣/♦
shows 5/5 in the majors, 7-10/11+ points respectively
- 3♥/♠
shows 11+ points with 5+ cards in the bid suit, 4 in the other major
- 3NT shows 12-14 points, 4/4 in the majors
If 2♣ is doubled:
- Pass denies 3-card support for either major
- Redouble is a forcing relay asking for Advancer's better
major, then:
- 2♦ shows equal length
- 2♥/♠
shows 5+ cards in the bid suit, 4 in the other major
- 2♦ is natural and non-forcing
- 2♥/♠
are to play
- 2NT is natural and invitational, with a stop in doubler's
implied suit [if any]
After 1NT - 2♣ - 2♦:
- Pass shows no interest in competing
- Double is the same as a 2♦ relay
- 2♥/♠
are to play
- 2NT is the same as the 2NT relay without interference
After 1NT - 2♣ - 2♥/♠:
- Double is for penalties
- 2NT is natural and invitational
- Other bids are natural and non-forcing
After 1NT - 2♣ - 2NT [Lebensohl]:
- Double asks for better major
- Pass followed by double is for penalties
- Other bids are natural and non-forcing
Advancer Bids 2♦
[showing a 4-card major with a longer minor, 10-14 HCP, no
interference]:
- Pass is to play, weak with long diamonds
- 2♥ shows 3+
cards in hearts [0-10]: to play opposite four hearts; advancer
passes or bids 2♠
- 2♠ shows 3+
cards in spades [0-10]: to play opposite four spades; advancer
passes or bids his minor
- 2NT is a range ask: advancer bids his minor
with a minimum or his major with a maximum
- 3♣ is to play in
advancer's minor; advancer passes or corrects
- 3♦ asks for
advancer's major
- 3♥/♠
is forcing with 5+ of the bid suit
- 3NT/4♥/♠
are all to play
After interference:
- double or redouble asks for the major or
shows the other major
- 3♣ is pass or
correct for the minor
- after 2♦ is
doubled:
- pass is to play if advancer's suit is
diamonds
- redouble is a relay for advancer's major
- 2♥/♠
are to play
- 2NT is natural and invitational with a
stop in doubler's implied suit [if any]
- after 2♦ is
overcalled with 2♥/♠:
- double shows 4+ cards in the other major
- 2NT is natural and invitational
- 3♣ is to
play in advancer's minor
- other bids are natural and forcing
- after 2♦ is
overcalled with 2NT [Lebensohl]:
- double asks for advancer's major
- pass followed by double is for penalties
- 3♣ is to
play in advancer's minor
- other bids are natural and forcing
